5 simple ways to create a modern interior design

Modern interior design is defined by simple, uncluttered and clean spaces.

Traditional ornaments, curves and complex shapes are replaced with straight, defined lines, a neutral palette and a blend of indoor and outdoor living.

We have pulled together five simple ways to create a modern interior design. Be inspired by some of our favourite styles and create the contemporary home of your dreams!

1. Let the light shine through

Modern interior design is almost exclusively light and airy. Traditional dark interiors and closed off rooms are now breezy spaces with large windows. Natural light is necessary, so check the orientation of your home and ensure your main living spaces are facing north to maximise the amount of sunlight you’ll receive. When it comes to artificial light, opt for downlights or a feature light that emulates a contemporary feel.

2. An open floor plan is your friend

Unite your home with an open-plan design. For a seamless experience that adds to that airy feel, blur the lines between kitchen and living, bathroom and bedroom, indoors and outdoors. Many homes feature an adjoining alfresco space with large doors or even a bi-fold option to further enhance the openness. A modern design allows you to spend more time with your family as you cook, clean, relax and entertain in the same spaces.

3. Neutral colours with vibrate accents

The walls, floors, ceiling and larger furnishing should all comprise of a neutral colour palette. Contemporary colours like whites, creams, browns, greys and black let the furniture’s natural shape and detail shine through, and your accent pieces can then stand out on a clean base. Don’t add too many elements though, modern interior design is all about the ‘clean’ look, so aim for less clutter and larger pieces of art or décor.

4. Make a (subtle) statement with your flooring

Your flooring is a vital part of modern interior design. Bare hardwood floors, large tiles or polished concrete all offer a beautiful finish with minimal fuss. Use area rugs for your living areas and dining room to break up the space and add warmth to the home. Keep it simple with less lines and more focus on the area as a whole.

5. Natural materials for an indoor/outdoor lifestyle

Organic materials like wood, marble, rock and other such textiles are a great way to blend the indoor and outdoor elements of your home. Use them as a feature wall, for your decking or displayed throughout your home for a beautiful finish that emulates the contemporary home.
