Home Improvement Resolutions to Make in 2022

Read a book a month. Learn a new language. Drink more water. Sure, these are all noble New Year’s Resolutions, but at Hotondo Homes, we’re thinking much bigger. Let’s face it: 2021 was a year full of unexpected challenges. After spending more time in our homes than we’d liked, there’s no doubt that we noticed a few things we wanted to change about our living space. That’s why we’ve curated a list of the top home improvement resolutions to make in 2022.

February: Declutter

You don’t need to wait for spring to do a bit of spring cleaning. If you’ve accumulated excess personal belongings over the years, there’s no better time than early in the year to clear it out. While collecting items can turn a house into a home, too much clutter can decrease your productivity and negatively affect your living space. Our tips? Declutter one room at a time, beginning with the easiest room first. Review your wardrobe and donate anything you haven’t worn in a year. And any spare linen, duplicate kitchenware, toys, books and even furniture can also be donated.

April: Boost your kerb appeal

Most New Year’s resolutions revolve around our own personal appearance, but what about the appearance of our homes? Improve your kerb appeal by welcoming guests with some low-cost upgrades: mow your lawn and do some landscaping to freshen up your garden, touch up the paint if needed and give your windows a wash or even invest in new outdoor furniture for your front porch or some new potted plants for the front door. You might also want to invest in some solar lighting to illuminate your walkway and facade for guests during the colder months.

June: Improve your home’s insulation

Did you know that energy-efficient windows can save you up to 12% annually on your energy bills? Replace draughty windows and keep your home warm. While it may sound counterintuitive to upgrade your windows in the colder months, you could secure a good deal in the off-season.

Don’t forget that should you decide to sell your home down the track, your value and marketability will increase.

August: Bathroom remodel

If you want to remodel any room in your home, make it your primary bathroom. This is a surefire way to improve the value of your home if and when the time comes to sell it. Take a look at what's trending in bathroom design and figure out which styles work with your space, then get quotes from local contractors.

October: Give your home a fresh coat of paint

With spring just around the corner, it may be time to update your exterior with a new paint job to protect yourself from the elements. If your home is made of lightweight cladding, you can DIY or hire a professional to paint it for you but make sure you choose a high quality paint that can prevent the exterior wood from rotting. Don’t forget to pressure wash your walls and repair damaged surfaces first.

November: Make eco-friendly upgrades

With some basic swaps, you can save money and make your home more eco-friendly. A few things you can do include swapping your standard lights for LED light bulbs and getting into the habit of turning off the air conditioning or lowering the thermostat when you leave your home. You might even want to consider installing solar panels on your roof. And, when cleaning: think green. A lot of the detergents we’ve grown up with and love to use could be harming the environment. Consider making your own with equal parts bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to replace bleach.
