Master Bedroom Locations: Pros and Cons

Second only to the kitchen, a master bedroom is said to be the most important room in a home. After all, you’ll be spending one-third of your life there so you want to be able to get the most out of the layout and placement.

When you’re designing your new space with Hotondo Homes, you have the freedom to choose your favourite home design from over 90 flexible floor plans on offer. So, where is the best place to locate your master bedroom? You may want to consider these pros and cons before making your decision about master bedroom placement.

Ground floor master bedroom

For obvious reasons, ground floor master bedrooms are not only convenient but they are an attractive and popular option. You’ll have safe and easy access to the rest of the rooms in the home that you use every day - for example, the kitchen, laundry, garage and living room. Ground floor master bedrooms usually remain cooler than the second storey of a home, saving you on utility bills. Being able to access your ground floor bedroom means you won’t have any accessibility issues as you get older.

However, it’s also worth remembering that a ground floor master bedroom may not be as peaceful and quiet as you’d expect, especially if it’s positioned near foot traffic. Furthermore, when the master bedroom faces the front of the home, motorists and headlights may disrupt your sleep.

First floor master bedroom

If you’re a light sleeper, a first floor master bedroom will be a great option as you’ll be less likely woken up by noise from the TV or the sound of pots and pans from the kitchen. Additionally, you’ll be able to appreciate those sweeping views of the property and neighbourhood from upstairs. And, when placed at one end of the hallway, the master bedroom can still maintain its privacy even when the floor is shared with other bedrooms.

Despite this, you may hear noise and clatter from the other bedrooms. Moreover, climbing up and down the stairs can get tedious, even for the fittest - and should you have mobility issues at any point in life, you’ll have difficulty getting upstairs to your bedroom.

Front master bedroom

Front master bedrooms are a popular choice as they provide you with peace of mind. One, you can glance out the window to identify visitors. Two, if you have young children, your bedroom won’t be too far away from theirs so you can keep a closer eye on them.

If you’re a light sleeper though, you may be bothered by street lights or find your peace is disrupted by noises at all hours. Your privacy might also be compromised if you opt for a front master bedroom due to a possible lack of privacy if the bedroom is located on the ground floor.

Back master bedroom

No doubt one of the quietest locations in the home for your master bedroom, positioning it in the back means your sleep won’t be interrupted by street noise, approaching headlights or even people entering or leaving your house.

The only downside is that you may feel a little disconnected from the rest of the house, especially if you have younger children.
