8 Signs You’re Ready to Build A New Home

It can be difficult to know when to recognise that you’ve outgrown your current home and build a new one. Fortunately, we’re here to help you make up your mind with some key signs that can give you the nudge you need to move on.

If any of the below signs are resonating with you, it might be time to look into building a new home.

1. Your current home feels too small

With the addition of sports equipment, clothing, furniture, and every other belonging you’ve ever collected over the years, a home that once felt big can feel very cramped. If you’re living on top of your family or roommate with barely any room to spare, then it might be time to build a bigger and better place.

2. …or there’s too much space

In contrast, your children may have moved out of the family home and you’re suddenly feeling like the space is too big for you. Downsizing might be the best financial decision you’ve ever made.

3. Your daily commute is too long

If your commute to work seems to be more of an inconvenience than anything else, it might be time to build a new home that’s closer to your place of employment. If you’re spending over an hour driving to and from work each day, or spending hours on public transport, then it might make more sense to make the move.

4. You’ve outgrown a fast-paced lifestyle

You used to love the noisy traffic, didn’t mind the pollution, and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of city living. However, now you’re looking for a slower, quieter neighbourhood in which to relax. If you’re ready to say hello to a more rural environment - away from the bars, shows, and restaurants - then it’s a good idea to start looking at building away from the city.

5. Odd demographics

Just like we grow out of clothes or music taste, we can also grow out of a neighbourhood. If you look around and feel like you’re not fitting in with your neighbours, however lovely they may be, you might want to move somewhere that’s in close proximity to similarly aged people.

6. You’re ready to start a family

It’s one of life’s biggest milestones: if you’re ready to start a family but you’re lacking the space in your current home or the suburb doesn’t have childcare facilities, parks, or schools close by, this may encourage you to look to build elsewhere.

7. Traditional vs. modern

While it’s possible to update any home with renovations, it can always have that old-fashioned element. Modern-style homes are highly sought after, so the resale value will always remain high. Add in newer home conveniences and energy-efficient appliances, and a new home build starts to look more promising.

8. You’re Ready to Build Your Property Portfolio

You may be in a position to start building up your property portfolio, so building a new duplex home to create a second stream of income is a good move. You can live in one of the homes while renting out the other and building yourself a nest egg that will benefit you long term.
