How To Better Organise Your Bedroom

When people think of getting a good night’s sleep, most focus on investing in better bed accessories, such as supportive mattresses, comfortable pillows and soft quilts and doonas.

While all these are important, you can’t underestimate the importance of decluttering and organising your bedroom. Once achieved, your space will feel clean, relaxing and spacious - and become the perfect setting for a well-rested night’s sleep.

Your bedroom should be a calm and inviting sanctuary, so if you’re feeling more wired than relaxed when you go to retire for the evening, you just may benefit from our helpful suggestions below.

Tips on how to organise your bedroom

1. Start with a blank slate

Before you do anything else, it’s a good idea to make your bed. Nothing compares to fresh linen on your bed, and it’s a real mood changer. So, strip your bed of all its sheets and start over with new linen.

2. Little steps are the way to go

It can be an overwhelming task if you pull out the entire contents of your bedroom in one go. So, start small. We suggest beginning with your dresser drawers and organising them one at a time. The concept is to focus on an area and once it’s 100% completed and you’re satisfied with it, move on. It’s those little wins that will keep you motivated to organise the rest of your room. Invest in drawer dividers to keep certain items neatly sorted so it stays organised.

3. Throw it away

We’re talking about bills, paperwork, and other items that have no place in your bedroom. Recycle them or store them in a filing cabinet in another part of your home. It’s a good reminder to also leave your laptop out of the bedroom completely. It’s a place that should encourage rest, not have you thinking about work.

4. Clean up your piles of clothes

Put clean clothes away immediately and place dirty ones in the laundry basket. All clean clothes should be folded neatly or hung up properly. Take the time to do this, and you’ll find your clothes will be much easier to find when you need them in the morning when getting ready for work. Also, clutter happens when you have too much of something, so if you haven’t worn it in six months, donate it or sell it online.

5. Make space, not waste

In a bedroom, empty space is always prime real estate. Unfortunately, it’s also hard to come by. Invest in space-saving products, like over door storage material boxes, a bamboo clothes rail, space saving hangers, and over the door hooks. If you’re handy with a drill, you could even install some floating shelves on an empty wall in your bedroom.

6. Stop mess before it happens

It’s all too easy to let things pile up on empty floor spaces, bedside tables or over chairs, so it’s a good idea to stop clutter before it lands. One way to stop this is to style your bedside tables with beautiful pieces of decor, like photo frames, candles, book stacks or plants. If you don’t have one already, consider investing in a bedside table with drawers to tuck miscellaneous items away.
